--President Abraham Lincoln, Second Inaugural Address, March 4, 1865
(Six weeks later, he would be fatally shot by John Wilkes Booth.)

Hooded Klansman with Shotgun
The Ku Klux Klan (KKK) didn’t exist until after the Civil War, originating in 1865 in Tennessee. Using violence, their targets were newly emancipated slaves. Since the 2016 election, they have broadened their targets beyond Black Americans to include Jews, immigrants, homosexuals, and Catholics.
